Matt Houk is in his sixth season season with Golden Gopher volleyball and second as an associate head coach. Houk comes to Minnesota after a six-tenure as the head coach at the University of South Dakota.
Houk began his Minnesota tenure in March of 2014. Since his arrival at Minnesota, Houk assisted Gopher coach Hugh McCutcheon to the 2015 and 2018 Big Ten championship and back-to-back Final Four berths. Coaching primarily the setters and defensive specialists, Houk worked with Samantha Seliger-Swenson the past four seasons. As a rookie, Seliger-Swenson went on to become the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the AVCA North Region Freshman of the Year, a four-time All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year. In just her sophomore season, Seliger-Swenson became the Big Ten Setter of the Year and a First Team All-American. On the defensive side, the Gophers improved from 13.66 digs per set in 2014, to 15.50 per set in 2015. He also coached CC McGraw to Freshman All-Big Ten honors and Volleyball Magazine Freshman All-America accolades. |
Laura Kasey (née Benzing) is in her fifth year with the Gopher Volleyball program after joining the team in January 2015. She is in her second year as associate head coach.
Kasey helped Minnesota to the 2015 and 2018 Big Ten championships and back-to-back NCAA Final Four apprearances. Working primarily with the middle blockers, Kasey helped Hannah Tapp and Paige Tapp to All-America honors, while Hannah was named a First Team All-Big Ten selection in 2015. |
In 20 years at the helm of Michigan's volleyball program, Mark Rosen is the winningest volleyball coach in Michigan's history with 408 wins and a .616 win percentage, despite competing in arguably the toughest conference for collegiate volleyball. In his time with the Maize and Blue, Rosen has coached 10 All-Americans and guided the Wolverines to NCAA post-season play 17 times. Michigan has also earned 61 wins over top-25 opponents during this period, while being ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 poll in each of the last 12 seasons.
He firmly established the Wolverines in the national spotlight by guiding the team to its first national semifinal appearance in school history in 2012. He coached U-M to its first Elite Eight appearance in school history in 2009 and has appeared in seven Sweet 16s (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2018). The longest tenured coach in program history, Rosen's .616 winning percentage at Michigan ranks first among the program's head coaches. He is one of only two current Big Ten head coaches to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament in 17 of the last 20 seasons, with Rosen's Wolverines advancing to the second round or better 12 times. |
Jerome Fraisse was hired as an assistant coach on May 24, 2019 after serving as a volunteer assistant for 15 months with the Wolverines.
In his season as a volunteer assistant with the program, he helped the Wolverines post a 24-10 record in 2018, advancing to the NCAA Regionals in Provo, Utah where they ended their season with a loss to No. 5 Texas in the round of 16. He was responsible for coaching the setters, developing practice plans and preparing and analyzing scouting reports and game plans. Fraisse came to Ann Arbor, Michigan by way of Grenoble, France, where he spent three years playing for the Grenoble Volleyball Club ProB as both an outside hitter and middle blocker. |
In his four seasons in charge of Central Michigan volleyball, coach Mike Gawlik has put the program on a firm foundation, culminating in 2019 with a Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Award.
That well-deserved honor followed a magnificent season that saw the Chippewas finish 21-9, earn a share of the MAC West title, and advance to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The division crown was CMU’s first since 2003. The NIVC berth marked CMU’s first postseason appearance since 2011 and the 21 victories were the most for the program since 2007. |
